 Infrastructure Facilities
The carefully chosen collection in the library consists of (a) Books which relate directly to subjects in the curriculum of the various courses (b) Books which deal with related topics or allied fields of study in the Curriculum (c) Reference books which include dictionaries, encyclopedias, year books, atlases etc. (d) Selected books of general interest of curricular, extra-curricular or recreational reading and (e) the learned, scientific and popular periodicals. There is a separate section for those preparing for competitive examinations. The library subscribes to a large number of National and International journals covering various specialised areas. All the stock and lending of books are channelled through computers. Computerisation helps easy retrieval and tracking the movement of books. The students have facility for photocopying research references at concessional rate. Mediar, Medline, Internet and E-mail facilities are also provided. As on this date, there are 18,060 books in Science College Library, 4,030 books in Paramedical Sciences Library and 12,050 books in Engineering College Library. At least 10,000 to 15,000 books are added every year. These Libraries subscribe to more than 150 National and 45 International journals. Laboratories: Well-equipped laboratory facilities are provided as per the educational regulations laid down by the Universities concerned, Pharmacy Council of India and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Research Activities: Research education is more than a continuation of college-level studies. At its best, research education is an apprenticeship - a student develops capacity of independent research by working closely with scholars, whose work can serve as a model. Achieving this requires a spirit of enquiry which vel's college tries to inspire. To motivate the students for research in our institutions, the science departments provide adequate opportunities for those who have research aptitude. The laboratories in Microbiology and Biotechnology are provided with sophisticated equipment. The students are allowed to choose their research area. The college has been approved by UGC to facilitate the flow of fund for research projects. To facilitate this, there are equipments like: Auditorium: "Shivalayaa" is a fully air-conditioned auditorium of 1500 seating capacity with a view to hold various seminars, conferences, intra and inter-collegiate cultural festivals. It is one of the biggest auditoriums in this part of Chennai that provides an opportunity for the students to exhibit their innate talents during the course of their study. Physical Education: The institutions have vast and well laid out tracks. Excellent facilities are offered for all the indoor games in which students are trained by a qualified Physical Director and his team of assistants. Students are encouraged to participate in various inter collegiate competitions whereby they are given a chance to exhibit their talents and win medals and trophies. Transportation: Pallavaram is well connected by local electric train network and City Transport Corporation buses. College buses are available from the Pallavaram Railway Station to the campus and vice versa at nominal rate. Vans are available for Vel's Vidyashram children with different boarding points according to the convenience of the parents. Hostels: There are separate hostels for men and women in the campus itself for the convenience of outstation students. The room rent and establishment charges will be fixed reasonably by the management. Arrangements have been made for washing clothes, which are to be collected and delivered periodically at the student's expenses. A fully qualified Medical Attendant is available at the campus. Medical and hospital facilities are available at Pallavaram itself and the cost of the same would have to be met by the students. Mess and Canteen facilities are available for the inmates at reasonable rates. |
