Humanity, and is a torch which illuminates the world. - Louis Pasteur Microbiology is exceptionally broad discipline encompassing specialties as diverse as biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, taxonomy, pathogenic bacteriology, food and industrial microbiology and ecology. Society benefits from microorganisms in many ways including the production of antibiotics, vaccines, vitamins, enzymes, cheese and many other important products. Indeed modern biotechnology rests upon a microbiological foundation. Of course microorganisms also cause severe form of human diseases and disrupted the society over the millennia. The Department of Microbiology is one of the their prestigious departments in Vel's college of Science that offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Applied Microbiology (Semester System) affiliated to University of Madras. The Department of Microbiology was established in 1993, initially with UG programme in Microbiology, and the PG programme in Applied Microbiology was started on 1997. The department has produced 359 graduates and 70 postgraduates. The department plans to start research program - M.Phil, during the academic year 2006-07 and the department will be upgraded to a major research program - Ph.d., in futute. Facilitiies: Separate laboratories are provided for both UG and PG students. Isolated working spaces have been provided to perform Mycology, Virology, Bacteriology, Immunology and Molecular biology experiments. All basic instruments necessary to carry out microbiological works are available. Apart from this, certain specific instruments like Phase contrast microscope with photo micrographic equipment, Dark field microscopy, Refrigerated high-speed centrifuge, ELISA washer & reader, Electrophoretic equipments, Biological safety cabinets-one class 1 & other class 3 are also available. Advance instruments like UN-spectrophotometer. Gel documentation system, PCR, CO2 incubator, Batch fermentor and HPLC can be utilized at the common laboratory. Academic Excellence: The Department is noted for producing students of excellence in studies. Every year the students of Microbiology are able to secure university ranks. This has helped them to get a proper placement or for doing advance research both in India and abroad. 20 of our PG students are pursuing higher studies at various Research institutions in UK, USA and Germany. |
